Fast-growing Icelandair adds flights to Alaska

Fast-growing Icelandair will make Alaska its newest North American destination.

The carrier says it will start seasonal nonstop flights between Anchorage and Reykjavik on May 15. Icelandair will offer two flights a week through "mid-September" on Boeing 757-200 aircraft.

Anchorage will become the Icelandair's tenth destination in North America. The others are Boston, Denver, Halifax (seasonal), Minneapolis/St. Paul (seasonal), New York JFK, Orlando Sanford (seasonal), Seattle, Toronto (seasonal) and Washington Dulles (seasonal).

"This year Icelandair celebrates 75 years of aviation and operates the strongest network in its history," Icelandair CEO Birkir Holm Gudnason says in a statement announcing the Anchorage service. "By using Keflavik International Airport as our hub, Icelandair is able to afford passengers convenient and economical flights between North America and Europe. Flights from Alaska to Iceland are approximately 7 hours and offer three cabins of service, leather seats and personal in-flight entertainment centers for all passengers."

Icelandair says Alaska travelers will be ableto connect via Reykjavik to more than 20 destinations in Europe.

"In addition to opening up a new market for Icelandic tourism, travelers will now have a refreshing new option when flying from Alaska to Europe," Gudnason says in the release.

Icelandair also is expanding an existing relationship with Alaska Airlines, which will coordinate with Icelandair to offer connecting flights onward from Anchorage.

"Icelandair's well-timed arrival and departure connects well with Alaska Airlines and will help share and serve all of Alaska," Scott Habberstad, Alaska Airlines' director, sales and community marketing-Alaska, says in the release.

Elsewhere, Icelandair also said it planned to add seasonal service from its Reykjavik hub to two new destinations in Europe: Zurich and St. Petersburg. Flights on both routes (two a week) begin June 1 and will run through mid-September.
