Aruna Chadha’s bail plea rejected in Geetika suicide case

A Delhi court on Friday rejected the bail plea of Aruna Chadha, accused in the suicide case of former flight attendant Geetika Sharma.

District Judge S K Sarvaria dismissed the bail application of Chadha, an official of the now-defunct MDLR Airlines, where Geetika had worked as well. She was arrested on August 8 and the court last week had extended her judicial custody till September 11.

The court dismissed Chadha’s bail plea, agreeing with the prosecution’s submission that she may tamper with evidence and influence witnesses. Chadha had sought bail on the ground that she has a seven-year-old daughter and old parents to look after.

Senior advocate Ramesh Gupta, appearing for Chadha, argued that Geetika had committed suicide because her parents were unhappy with her. He also said even the post-mortem report does not reveal anything incriminating against Chadha or Kanda.

Chadha’s bail plea was opposed by the Delhi Police, which said she does not deserve bail as she had lied on many points during her interrogation. Public prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said Chadha, during her interrogation, did not disclose sending to Geetika forged letters, which said an extradition proceeding has been initiated against her in Dubai.

The public prosecutor said Geetika’s suicide notes clearly mentioned that Chadha and Kanda were responsible for her extreme step. He added Chadha may tamper with evidence like Kanda, who destroyed his mobile phones with which he used to talk to Geetika.

He said Chadha had called up Geetika’s mother on August 3, telling her that Geetika should sign some papers and that whatever Kanda had said about her character was right. He added that Kanda used to disguise himself to stalk Geetika.
