I have a Wall Street friend who runs his own institutional boutique research and investment banking firm. While he has significant financial wherewithal, he is very proud of the pecuniary advantage he gains flying JetBlue and he brags openly about his $179 New York-to-Florida air fares. Then, with a disapproving tone, he asks if I flew down on my own airplane. I, of course, enjoy saying “yes,” adding, “It took just over three hours door-to-door and it was like flying in my own living room.”
We all know those who feel some pleasure and accomplishment ferreting out the lowest priced ticket only to sit like a pretzel squeezed in a middle seat for hours. I say, “good for them”. Yet many of those same people can comfortably afford a private aviation alternative without being aware of how cost effective it can be. Let’s check it out.
A 1/16th fractional share in a Piaggio Avanti II from Avantair (disclaimer: I sit on Avantair’s board of directors) or a 1/16th light-jet fractional share from NetJets, a Berkshire Hathaway company, typically includes 50 occupied hours. This means you only pay when you or someone you designate is aboard so, unlike charter, there are no “deadhead” or positioning fees involved. At light-jet speeds of more than 400 mph, which the Avanti achieves with ease, 50 annual hours covers a lot of ground.
The way I look at it, both options offer a yearly operating cost of between $125,00 – $175,000. In addition, of course, you must make a capital investment in the fractional share, which means you have ownership in a piece of the aircraft. For some, depreciation benefits and tax deductions might be available when the aircraft is used for business purposes. Also, keep in mind that at the end of your five- to ten-year contract period, you can sell your share and recoup some, if not all, of your investment depending on the market price at the time.
Now, think about boat ownership. I have friends with $1,000,000 sport fishing or cruising boats. A pretty accurate rule of thumb is that a boat costs you 20% of your purchase price each year to operate. On that $1,000,000 boat, that equals $200,000 a year. That’s a lot more than an airplane that flies at light-jet speed and can take you from Maine to Florida anytime you’re ready.
How about a second home, say in Palm Beach. A “starter house” will cost you $1,000,000. By the time you get through with taxes, insurance, maintenance etc, you are in jet-speed aircraft territory.
If you factor in what I call “life span protection”, and I believe my Avantair Piaggio Avanti saves me incalculable hours of commercial airport and air travel stress, therefor helping to add meaningful years to my life, it becomes even more attractive.
Forget, for a minute, the obvious business advantages of jet speed aircraft, and think of the lifestyle pluses. I built a house on Lake Champlain. It’s a five-hour drive from my winter home near Boston, but I can fly direct and it takes an hour and a half to two hours door to door! Not only that, I arrive fresh, relaxed and ready to enjoy the house. We also belong to Diamond Creek, a terrific golf club in Banner Elk, North Carolina. Without our own airplane we would have had to go through the usual commercial airport time hassle in Boston, then fly to Charlotte, NC and drive, which makes the trip more than seven 7 hours. In the Piaggio Avanti, its under 2 hours. We leave home at a decent hour, arrive in time for a leisurely lunch and have ample time for 18 holes of golf in the afternoon.
Now my cost obsessed friend can be bragging about his JetBlue “deal” standing in line waiting for a cab while I am working on my putting after a fine lunch, but, as someone once said, “how much fun is it being the richest man in the cemetery!” Or better still, “if you don’t spend it, your children will!”
So as I ponder the expense of owning a comfortable, capable aircraft that flies at jet speed, I think of the really nice things it does for me and my family — things like allowing us to enjoy life to the fullest, go whenever and where ever we want to with ease and most of all, spend precious time with our children and grandchildren.
Certainly, flying privately is not inexpensive. You have to look at value for it to make sense. For me, that value is enormous and I am certain many others might feel the same way. Just think of the wear and tear the airplane saves on your body and mind and the additional years I believe it will add to one’s life. In fact, when you factor in the intangibles, I think it’s actually a great bargain for the price!
